FAQ

Are you seeing clients in person?
Yes, I see clients in person in Van Alstyne, Texas. I am licensed in Texas and Oklahoma and can see anyone in those two states via teletherapy.
I’m thinking about calling for an appointment - what will happen when I do?

If you consider making a call to begin the process, you are more than halfway there! I offer a free 15-minute consultation to help you determine if we would be a good therapeutic fit for one another. During that consultation, we’ll talk about what’s going on with you, your goals for counseling, and I’ll answer your questions about how I work.

If we agree that we would be a good fit, you can expect to receive and complete some online paperwork.

If you determine that I’m not quite what you were looking for to fit your goals, I’m happy to make referrals for you to explore. Your mental wellness is my priority.

How long is a typical session, and how often?
Your first session is 90 minutes. This hour-and-a-half allows us time to cover all the paperwork, answer questions to your satisfaction, and still give you time for an entire 60-minute session. I suggest weekly sessions, total honesty, and completing any homework to the best of your ability.
What about insurance?
I can provide a superbill. Clients should contact their insurance for specific guidelines.
What types of payment do you accept?
I accept Zelle, cash, or through their online portal.
What types of clients and issues have you worked with?

My experiences include school counseling and drug and alcohol counseling. I’m a certified grief counselor. I have worked with married couples in long-term relationships or those thinking about getting married.

Persons in the LGBTQ+ community feel safe and welcomed in my office. As a Christian Counselor, while the Bible applies to everything, every situation does not immediately have to have the Bible thrown at it.

I have experience with all areas and situations of life. I treat all my clients with respect because taking the step to go to counseling is a huge one.

With what age range do you work?
I see ages 12 and up. I refer persons younger than 11 to a Registered Play Therapist.
How are you different from other therapists?

I focus on grief such as abortion, divorce, death, life transitions such as kids moving out for college or elderly parents moving in because they can no longer adequately care for themselves.

I help my clients identify how these events are affecting the family system. I also see those seeking premarital counseling.

What is therapy like with you?
You will have unhurried space to process your thoughts, feelings, and ideas. If needed, there may be homework, but it is generally guided independent study. You’ll be asked some hard questions but will be supported through them.
Does anyone cry in front of you?
Yes, all the time. And I am honored because that means they feel safe with me.
What are the risks and benefits of doing therapy?
Sometimes issues, feelings, and situations can worsen once they are identified. Just as many times, however, things will get better afterward.
Do I have to tell you everything?
My question to you is: why would you set aside self-care time during the week and pay for my time only to decide not to be completely honest?
Is our work confidential?

Occasionally I may need to consult with other professionals to provide you with the best care possible. Information is shared without identifying you.

I tried therapy before, and it didn’t seem to work for me. What will be different this time?

YOU are different this time. You are not the same person you were when you last tried therapy.

Each counselor uses a different approach to counseling, and that particular counseling style may not have fit you then. You also were probably at another point in your life with admitting some things to yourself and willing to be honest and open.

Whatever the reason, the free consultation is a good way to determine if we can save you time and frustration by deciding in advance whether we are a fit. Call today!
